Straw Bale Building Workshop

Join us for three days of tossing bales. In this workshop you will learn how to build a straw bale building from foundation to roof. Over the weekend we will teach you about stacking bales, notching bales, and making custom bales while we work on our 1300 sq. ft. post and beam farm house. The workshop will focus on hands-on training and building including: window and door details, creating rounded corners, and preparing the walls for plaster. We will also spend time discussing design, foundations and roofs.

Cob Building Course

During this eight day workshop you can expect to learn how to build beautifully sculpted cob walls for your new house, cottage, garden wall, or studio. We will cover everything from finding and preparing materials to finishing your building off with an earthen plaster. Students will learn how to put in windows and doors, as well as sculptural details like niches and arches and other 3-dimensional art. We will also spend ample time discussing foundations and roof systems, house design and appropriate technologies. This workshop is an ideal introduction to natural building, leaving you with the confidence and the know-how to start building.

Earthen Plasters and Floors Workshop

In this workshop you will learn how to pour the various layers of an earthen floor, prepare straw bale and cob walls for plaster, select raw materials, mix plasters, add pigments for color, and apply plasters tob oth interior and exterior walls.

Cob and Strawbale Workshop

Now you have a chance to actually learn how to use cob and straw bale construction to create buildings that are sacred, powerful, and alive: Hands-on experience in building a temple at Harbin. You’ll learn about site planning, drainage, sacred building geometry, passive solar design, bale construction, and cob application, while you add your chi to the magnificent new Harbin temple. SunRay Kelley - artist, architect, master builder - is a renown natural building teacher, offering his wisdom, humor and practical knowledge to each of the participants. Choose from eight workshops in May 2005.

Dates and Fees:
4-day weekday workshops: May 2-6, 9-13, 16-20, 23-27, includes camping Mon-Thurs evenings -- $280;

2-day weekend workshops: May 6-8, 13-15, 20-22, 27-29, includes camping Fri & Sat evenings -- $150.
